Just today our very favorite Real Live Lesbian mentioned that she is more of a National Park girl than a Vegas girl.
So leads me to ask you - What kind of vacationer are you?
I like my vacations to involve a cabana boy or a casino. Ideally both. But I am always game for a fun a road trip with some cool people too. Hiking - NO. Sleeping in a tent - Not for me. African Safari - Hell no. Backpacking through Europe - I'll be staying in the fancy hotel and meeting you in the cafes for brunch. I am not down for anything involves a Sherpa or the country of India. Did you see the beginning of Slumdog Millionaire? It is REALLY like that. And I am sorry, but my house is a zillion times more comfortable.
I am not as high maintenance as I sound. I promise. But I work freaking hard all year and on my vacation time I want to relax, not sacrifice. I do enjoy fishing and boating (which can be dirty and hard). But I want indoor pumbling and a soft bed at night.
How about you? What kind of vacationer are you?

Just a long as I can get away from the hell that is my job I can take either type of vacation. Something with a swim up bar or a nice cabin in the woods.
I like car camping for a weekend, but if I'm going to use up my precious vacation time, I want a city to enjoy and hundreds of years of history to explore. And a clean, charming place to sleep.
Dish - Yes. I like the swim up bar. The cabin in the woods is fine, but it not a vacation to me. I will still have to cook. And I know there will be bugs. That is more akin to my family's summer home, but not a vacation spot for me.
BS - What is this "car camping" of which you speak?
Used to love camping when I was younger. Now we camp in a 32' RV; nice :) I enjoy RVing with Hubs but It would be nice if we could just be there where ever there is. We make a wrong turn everytime we head out for crying out loud. I used to enjoy hotels but since I'm a bit of a germaphobe I really prefer my RV.
Love the mountains, woods and water. Keep me out of the sun :)
I'm akin to RLL - I decompress the most if I am in the moment - and in the environment. Give me a tent, a sleeping bag - it doesn't matter to me. In my perfect world, I'd travel to the nooks and crannies of the world - taking in the sights and the lifestyle of the "natives"
Cabana boy? 5-star hotels? Not my thing. I prefer the street food vendors and the people BEHIND the tourists to the actual tourist locations themselves.
Lu - We camped in a tent and later in trailer when I was young. I can see that is a good "family" vacation. But I am not a family and campgrounds are boring after 10 PM. Plus again, I have to do the cooking, shopping and cleaning. I can do that all at home.
Dana - I hear you. But that is not me. I like to relaxation that comes with a resort where someone says "Good Morning, Ms. Karen. Here is your towel." I want to be escape from my everyday life. I'll do the nooks and hidden teasures via a B&B. LOL.
Towel at the POOL. Get your mind out of the gutter. ;-)
I just go with the flow. I don't like overly scheduled vacations.
Anything goes as long as I have fun.
Camping is a nice weekend getaway, but a vacation is Vegas or a beach.
I hate camping. Once in girl scouts was enough for me! I like to go all out when I go on vacation which is why I save just for it. I hate when people go on vacations and refuse to do certain things because of money. I just wanna say you're on vacation splurge! If you don't indulge once in a while you will go crazy.
Give me the swim up bar, chase lounges and some type of body of water and I'm set.
I'd much rather visit a National Park than go to Vegas. My vacation next week will include staying at a good friend's house and watching movies, drinking wine, and soaking in the hot tub.
You could not pay me to go camping or hiking, biking or climbing...any of that shit. I just want a 4 star hotel and lots of fancy meals.
I can do the camping and stuff, but I like to have a real toilet and a real shower to use!
I have sworn off vacationing since our May trip to Disney World. I would have had fun had my family not complained the entire time. Disney is a "working" vacation - you have to work for the experience. The beach is a "vacation" vacation. Different experiences, but both can be fun if you have the right mind set.
Although from now on, my family can make their own damn vacation plans. I'm staying home. :-)
You know, I would love to travel to so many places all over the world. But, If I'm going to fly 13 hours to some remote locale, I want to fly first class and I want there to be a nice hotel near the cool sight seeing areas.
As I get older I start thinking that a nice hotel with a lounge and 24 hour room service where the staff is total suck-ups is the best option.
I also love Vegas, but you can get surprisingly shitty service at many of the hotels out there. Gotta go high end! ;-)
Oh and ... Believe it or not, even though I live in one of the best areas in the country to go camping and floating and all that shit, I've never done either. I'm pretty sure I would hate it. I want, heat or A/C depending on the weather, TV, internet and a bar. And maybe a casino. ;-)
Unless I am taking my son somewhere for a few days, I just like taking off and hanging around with no committments and no plans. I guess the new term is "staycation". Hell, I've been doing that for years. Cheers Karen!!
