My Take On Headlines

So the Governor of South Carolina had an affair. Big freaking deal. People cheat. Duh. I'd be willing to be that men with money/power cheat more than the average person. Who really cares? Why is this national news? He was actually separated from his wife when he was Argentina. His wife kicked him out a few weeks prior and she has known about the affair for 5 months.

Ok, I get that that it is a problem if this staff couldn't reach him and there was an emergency. Yes, that part should be news - in South Carolina. I just don't get the whole national scandal. It was not as if he was caught with a hooker (ala NY and NV governors) or another man (ala NJ). I really don't get the media insanity on this one.

Switching gears, I had a friendly visit with my doctor this week. My body is continuing to refuse all oral efforts to absorb nutrients from food. It seems that at least for the foreseeable future, regular infusions are going to be part of my life. Which really isn't the biggest deal. It is a bit of a hassle to go to the hospital, but in the grand scheme of things I am not really sick. See, these infusions are given in out-patient chemo unit. There is nothing that puts my problems in better perspective than sitting among cancer patients who are actually sick.

Speaking of hospitals and such, did anyone see the Obama health care Q& A last night. I didn't. I opted for watching the season premier of Real World Cancun instead. (Hey! Don't judge me!!) The only clip I caught on the morning news involved Obama addressing a woman whose mother was denied a pacemaker by her insurance company because she was 100 years old. Eventually the mother did receive the pacemaker and continued to live to 105. Obama's response was "end of life issues are difficult." Yeah, really? Way to go out on limb with that answer.

This morning I read that Obama's health care reform plan does not address tort reform at all. I am not sure if that is true, but that surprises me. I am an attorney and I believe in a free-market economy. I also am a huge believer in personal economic responsibility. However, without some tort reform, I am not sure how the medical industry can survive health care reform. I also don't know where our nation is going to come up with the money for any reform, but that is whole different argument for another day.

If you saw the presentation, what did you think? Or if you have more info than me (which you probably do!) let me know what was said.

Just one more day until Friday. I hope I make it...

I agree with you on the SC Gov issue. It's not a party affiliation issue. It's the ability to be a leader issue that I'd be worried about.

He dropped the ball. Big time.

I also wonder why famous people are forced to publicize their affais. It's a private issue between the spouse. NOT the world.

Of course it isn't a big deal about the dude from SC or the other from NV, EXCEPT that they both have been on moral high horses most of their careers. They tell everybody else to keep it in the pants but they cannot themselves?

I agree with you re. the SC governor. Shit, our PRESIDENT was caught cheating with an intern and he didn't lose his job. The bigger issue is the SC governor didn't follow protocol when leaving the country AND wasn't responding to his staff inquiries. I'm pretty sure, though, we've all fucked up in our jobs. And all of us have learned from those experiences and are grateful when given another chance. I'm gonna guess, same holds true for this governor. No need for him to resign.

I think the Sanford story was a national story because he was "missing" for five days. And because there was an obvious effort on part of his political staff to lie and mislead the public about his being missing. And yes, he was separated, but the separation only came after he admitted to his wife of the affair. And I also think that it's a national story because Sanford is a national political figure. He has made clear his intent to seek the Presidency and was heavily considered as the VP candidate in '08.

I don't care about the affair. But, the rest of it? The disappearance, the presser, the hypocrisy? Comedy gold.

I refused to watch the health care Q&A last night. But, just last week there were lots of stories about Obama adding tort reform to his plan hoping that he could pull more moderate dems and some repubs into the fold.

Sorry you're still having trouble with that crud. I know that it's not terrible, but it still sucks that you have to have the injects and shit. Hope they figure something out and can actually get that cured!

Dang, was my comment long enough? I'm rambling today. Want me to go on? I have lots of thoughts on everything you talked about today.

I'll start at the beginning...

Okay, no I won't. ;-)

It must have been a slow news day...I'm sure it's not the last we'll hear of it.

I'm with Nilsa. It's not that he had the affair (I really didn't care that Clinton or Patterson or any of the others had an affair), it's that no one knew who was in charge of the state or how to reach the guy elected to BE in charge.

Dude. Living in Illinois, I can say NOTHING about shady governors.

Obviously, someone made a big deal of it for those of us not from SC to know he'd been missing for 5 days. As Jay so succinctly put it, "Appalachian Trail, Argentinian Tail" they sort of rhyme, right? (Except that *I* was on the A.T. on Sunday, not "clearing my head" down in Argentina.

And of course, it made news because he wasn't with his own kid on Father's Day.

I'm pretty sure most politicians are schmucks.

I question Sanford's leadership abilities, not because he had an affair, but because he made poor choices in leaving the country.

BIG NEWS! It doesn't matter what your party affiliation, if you are a politician, you are - by default - a hypocrite.
